The Story of the Implantable Insulin Pump
The Story of the Implantable Insulin Pump
The idea of the implantable insulin pump came before we had the technology to properly execute it.
We live in a time of rapid technological change. The exciting and remarkable emergence of design, component and manufacturing capabilities we are experiencing were unimaginable in the 1970s when the first implantable insulin pump was evolving from concept to reality. The pump we have today is far more sophisticated than those early models in the 1970s – and yet, our current implantable insulin pump does not incorporate the much needed improvements made possible by today’s technology. The story that follows is only a prelude to what we know can be… and what we hope will be.
A strong case may be made that peritoneal insulin delivery has clearly been proven to be the very best treatment for those of us who live with Type 1 Diabetes AND for those who live with Type 2 Diabetes and require insulin. A modern, affordable, technologically-advanced implantable insulin pump will enable millions of us to live far better lives.
